Lionesses Ready For Pressure
Steph Houghton says her England team-mates are enjoying living up to their new-found status as one of the best teams in the world.
The Lionesses are among the favourites to win Euro 2017, which began on Sunday (16th) with host nation Netherlands beating Norway.
Mark Sampson’s side went under the radar at the World Cup two years ago but finished third and rose to an all-time high of fourth in the FIFA rankings.
But after another unbeaten qualifying campaign, and a historic victory over world champions USA in March, Houghton believes England can do better than they did in Canada.
She said: “Going into the World Cup, we just wanted to enjoy every moment and see how far we could go.
“There wasn’t as much pressure on us to do well and we came away with a medal.
“But I think that different pressure will be good for us. Everybody’s thriving on it and wants to do as well as we possibly can.
“It’s nice to hear that people think of us as one of the favourites.
“Now it’s up to us to put in performances and let our actions do the talking because we have played well over the last few years.
“We gained momentum in the qualifiers and the friendlies we’ve had since Christmas and I really feel there’s a confidence in this team.
“I think we have to have that belief. We’re certainly working hard to try and make sure we’ve got a chance of winning that trophy.”
