Practice makes perfect

Young Lionesses' win over Italy built on the training pitch

England’s 2-1 win over Italy on Tuesday afternoon proved that practice does makes perfect, said boss Mo Marley.

The Young Lionesses sneaked past Enrico Sbardella’s side in the opening match of the UEFA Women’s U19 Championship in Northern Ireland.

The sides went in goalless at the break but Georgia Allen’s second-half brace was enough to collect all three points.

And Marley was delighted that all the hard work put in on the training pitch came to fruition.

She said: “We did lots of good things against Italy, but we’d like to do them for longer in the next game if possible.

“It was definitely a positive start with more to come. If you see them training, we know there’s more to come.

“The thing at this level is, can you transfer that in a big game when you know you’re playing against a top team?

“We can do it in training, now the challenge, as we’ve said all along, is can you do it against top teams?

“Against Italy we did that against one of the top teams in the tournament.”

England’s second tournament match is against the Netherlands on Friday night.
